Benefits
Through the regular practice of Shorinji Kempo students will improve in self defense, health and wellbeing. In addition, they build strength, stamina and balance. They also have a lot of fun.
Students benefit from the physical activity and will improve their coordination and motor skills while burning energy. Students build confidence, learn self discipline, practice cooperation and improve their social skills.
We follow the established and proven Shorinji Kempo curriculum that is in place in all Shorinji Kempo dojos around the world.
Class Structure
Class begins by reciting the Chinkon Gyo (oath, creed and meditation) and continues to warming up, stretching, and basic movements. Class then moves into technique practice. Technique practice consists of paired practice according to level and abilities. We take natural breaks throughout the practice time.

If you have any prior injuries, let us know before training starts
During class, we are always watching to ensure that people do not get injured. If someone is getting particularly rough with their training partner, we will step in and warn people to take it easy. Mutual respect and helping each other to develop are essential elements in Shorinji Kempo
Shorinji Kempo techniques are designed to subdue an attacker, by striking sensitive areas and applying joint locks. They are not designed to cause long term damage. However, like any other contact sports there are some risks, and we are vigilant of everyone's ability and will step in to keep you safe
Do I need to know Japanese?
It may benefit you if you know some basic Japanese because we use Japanese terminology for techniques, movement and counting, this is to provide everyone a common language when training
No prior language needed. With some effort, everyone can pick the Japanese terminology over time. Don't worry about feeling lost on your first few sessions, we teach in English.
